The Dark CrystalClear Filter
The legendary movie from Jim Henson. The Dark Crystal! This 1982 dark fantasy film, with only puppets as the cast, was a masterpiece and still holds a cult status for many adults who enjoyed the film as children (although we were scared to death of the sinister Skeksis!). Jim Henson, who would go on to make Labyrinth, found his creative footing and puppet mastery with The Muppets.
Now over 35 years later, The Dark Crystal: Age Of Resistance, a prequel, has hit Netflix and it's popularity has resurged! For all the fans, old and new, Beserk carries a collection of Dark Crystal merchandise, from pop culture collectables to puzzles and games.
The Dark Crystal's narrative begins nine hundred and ninety-nine and one trine (one thousand years) after Thra's formation, when cosmic beings known as urSkeks arrived on the planet through the Great Crystal (the beating heart of Thra) during the first Great Conjunction. Although the urSkeks desired to return to their homeworld, they could only do so during another Conjunction. Thus, for the next nine hundred and ninety-nine and one trine, they assisted both Aughra and the Gelflings in their technological development. When the time came for the urSkeks to return home, the darker halves of their natures prevented them from entering the Crystal. Instead, they were split into two new races: the cruel Skeksis and gentle urRu (Mystics). The Skeksis took control of the Castle, while the urRu took refuge in the Valley of the Standing Stones. The Skeksis cracked the Crystal, chipping off a shard, and caused a massive earthquake. The Skeksis, a reptilian bird like race, above all crave immortality, and they soon became the corrupt rulers of the land. They favour excessive flamboyance, emotional pettiness, and a wasteful attitude towards life. Due to the accelerated decomposition of their bodies, the Skeksis constantly attempt to prolong their lives by using the Dark Crystal's power, regardless of the growing darkness that is consuming Thra's environment and inhabitants, the Gelfling and the Podlings.
That's where our protagonists Jen and Kira come to the rescue! Jen and Kira are the only two remaining Gelfling alive, after their entire races were killed by the Skeksis or enslaved only to have their life essence sucked out by the Dark Crystal to help restore youth to the Skeksis. They encounter a prophecy saying that the Crystal must be healed by a Gelfling using the lost shard. The shard must be placed back in the Crystal to restore vitality to Thra. The third Great Conjunction arrives, and Jen, in the Castle of Crystal, inserts the broken shard at the exact moment of the conjunction. The urRu arrive and during the event they are merged back into one being with Skeksis. Jen, in fulfilling the prophecy, has restored rejuvenation, order and peace to the planet!
