Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction or science fantasy that incorporates advanced (but rudimentary) technology and aesthetic designs inspired by 19th Century industrial steam-powered machinery! Steampunk literature is set in an alternative history of the 19th Century's British Victorian era, also incorporating elements from America's "Wild West", in a future during which steam power has maintained mainstream usage by society. The term "retro-futuristic" can be applied here! Steampunk has developed into a fashion and lifestyle movement, with many Steampunk conventions, gatherings, performances, rallies and marches, and a multitude of cosplay opportunities being a result of the sub-genre (essentially making it a legitimate subculture). Steampunk has roots in the industrial-age architectural style, mass-production methods, food, clothing, mannerisms, exploration, and much more!
The origins of steampunk can be traced back to the 19th century, when writers such as Jules Verne and H.G. Wells were creating works of science fiction that featured advanced technology and gadgets. These stories were set in a time when steam power was still the primary source of energy, and they often featured elaborate clockwork devices and other contraptions.
From the aesthetics of Steampunk fashion, many iterations of clothing, accessories, jewellery, novelty items, homewares, cosmetics, and more. There are no firm guidelines for Steampunk fashion other than a tendency towards bustles, corsets, petticoats, wire hoop Steampunk dresses, gowns, waistcoats, parasols, aviator goggles, wire-rimmed spectacles and monocles, pocket chain watches, top hats and handlebar moustaches. Uppity-punk. Proper-punk!
On the surface, each different element of the Steampunk movement (cosplay, speculative fiction, artisan designers, and a counter-culture) appear to have tenuous links to each other, but under the umbrella of Steampunk, they all dovetail perfectly together in a culture with its own music, an emphasis on artisan design, and a do-it-yourself attitude and ethic. Beserk has a whole bunch of Steampunk stuff that will keep you satisfied, from Costumes, Boots, Handbags, tops, skirts, dresses, shoes, hourglass timepieces, hand mirrors, and more!
