The company was founded in 1837 by John Jacob Astor. Astor was born in Walldorf, Germany in 1763. He was the youngest of eight children. His father was a butcher and his mother was a baker's daughter. Astor immigrated to the United States in 1784. He first settled in New York City. He worked as a fur trader and made a fortune in the China trade. In 1803, he bought a farm in upstate New York.
