Lolita is a fashion subculture from Japan that is highly influenced by Victorian and Edwardian children's clothing and styles from the Rococo period. Nor is it the novel Lolita written by Vladimir Nabokov. It is unclear about the origins of the name in reference to fashion, but it was never intended to be compared to these specific works.

Lolita is a fashion subculture from Japan that is primarily influenced by Victorian- and Edwardian-era children's clothing styles from the late baroque period (late baroque is a highly ornamental and overly theatrical style of decoration which combines asymmetry, scrolling curves and gliding white and pastel colours, sculpted moulding, creating a quaint yet highly regal illusion of style and motion). A very distinctive aspect of Lolita fashion is the covetable aesthetic of extreme cuteness (like a Gothic kawaii).

Lolita Style

Another main feature of Lolita clothing is the volume of the skirt, often created by a petticoat. The skirt can be bell-shaped or A-shaped, and other components of Lolita sartorial expression can include a traditional stylised blouse (usually with lace trimmings and other embellishments), and the common wearing of of wigs in combination with other head wear accessories such as bows or bonnets. For further visual impact, Lolita's matching knee socks, ankle socks or tights, together with high heels or cute flats.
