Established in 1912, Sweida's celebrated its 100th Anniversary in May 2012. Being one of the first shops to open in the Brisbane Arcade, Mr Charles A Schweida kick-started the family business as a hairdresser. Family members followed in the trade until the Second World War, when son Leo Schweida, with his dancer wife Elva, continued the business name as a wig maker and theatrical supplier. After trading in the arcade for 50 years & expanding the business into fancy dress, ballet and dancewear, the shops were sold and Leo & Elva, who began contemplating their retirement commenced a small 'hobby' business in Annerley.
