Sanrio Company History

Sanrio was founded originally as Yamanashi Silk Company in 1960, by Shintaro Tsuji. In 1962, Shintaro expanded his enterprise from silk to rubber sandals with flowers painted on them. Having begun creating giftware they changed their company name and officially changed it to Sanrio in 1973. In 1974, the anthropomorphic cat girl Hello Kitty was created, and in 1975 the first Hello Kitty product was sold. Starting a phenomenon that has since taken over the world. With Hello Kitty becoming famous Sanrio soon became one of the most successful marketing brands in the world. Their products now include stationery, school supplies, gifts and accessories that are sold worldwide.
