What is a dragon? Typically a dragon is a large, serpentine legendary creature that appears in the folklore of many cultures around the world. They are often depicted as winged, horned, four-legged, and capable of breathing fire. They are very greedy and will often hoard vast amount of untold treasure, and are never willing to let anyone get their grubby hands on a single gold coin of it. They are often said to have ravenous appetites and to live in caves, where they hoard treasure, and are considered a terrifying monster that may only be defeated or slain by a great warrior or cultural hero. They also live incredibly long lives, to the point of being immortal.

Famous dragons include Smaug (The Hobbit), Yevaud (A Wizard of Earthsea), Drogon, Rhaegal & Viserion (A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones), Saphira (Eragon), Falkor (The Neverending Story), and Puff the Magic Dragon. But there are so many more dragons in literature, including dragons in Raymond E Feist's Riftwar books, Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels, the Forgotten Realms books by R.A. Salvatore, the dragons in the Dragonlance universe by Margaret Weiss and Tracy Hickman, Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series, David Eddings' Belgariad and Mallorean, and Terry Goodkind's The Sword of Truth epic fantasy series (this last one has sold over 25 million copies worldwide, which just goes to show that readers LOVE their dragons). And who hasn't heard of Dungeons & Dragons?
