The humble (and adorable) domesticated kitty cat (Feline catus) is a small carnivorous mammal. Apart from being cute as hell, cats have a strong flexible body, quick reflexes, sharp teeth and retractable claws adapted to killing small prey, with excellent night vision and a keen sense of smell. They are solitary hunters but are a social species.
If you're like us, you adore cats. Why do we find these creatures so irresistible? Perhaps you’ve owned a cat - or more likely, been owned by one. You know the joy that cats can bring, even when they are being obnoxious. What is it about cats that captures our hearts and enslave us through their feline charms? These beautiful creatures have a rare quality that humans would do well to cultivate: a large capacity to receive affection. When a lovely cat saunters our way, it’s not easy to resist the impulse to stroke him or her, even when it’s not so wise!
One reason we may love to stroke these adorable creatures is because the rhythmic action of stroking their velvety fur feels good. It focuses our attention, as happens in mindful meditation. Delighting in our physical presence, they may begin to purr and perhaps roll on their backs, exposing their vulnerability. As if to say, “I trust you. Give me some love and make me feel good.” We love cats because they are great entertainment. Your cat probably does all sorts of goofy things to keep you laughing. All they need is a few small toys, a piece of string or a laser pointer and they can keep you entertained for hours. If you live in a small house or apartment, a cat is a perfect pet. They don’t take up a lot of space and can easily fit into a small crate when you’re travelling. While cats need to be cared for like any other pet, they don’t need to take up a lot of time. They don’t need to be walked, bathed or constantly let outside. You can use the time you do have with your cat playing and having fun. Unlike dogs, you typically don’t need to give your cat a bath. This is good because they most likely do not want to take one. Cats are designed to keep themselves clean, and we think they do a pretty decent job of it! It seems kind of gross, but cats are like built-in exterminators that can help keep your home free of mice, rats, and other vermin. Just having a cat in the house will keep some critters away. Your cat isn’t going to resent you or be upset when you have to work all day. They can occupy themselves and don’t need to be let out to use the bathroom. No more worrying about rushing home at lunch or right after work to check on your cats. Chances are, they’re fine.
Their little mews and meows are so darn cute! They love to talk to their owners, and you may eventually be able to tell what all the different noises mean. While they may seem standoffish to people who don’t have or understand cats, we know that our kitties love us just as much as we love them.
