Beauty and the Beast is a 1991 animated musical romantic fantasy film produced by Walt Disney. It is based on the French fairy tale of the same name. The tale focuses on the story of a relationship between the Beast, a prince who is magically transformed into a monster and his servants into household objects as punishment for his arrogance, and Belle, a young woman from a nearby town, whom he imprisons in his castle to become a prince again.

To break the curse and transform back into a prince, the Beast must learn to love Belle and earn her love in return before the last petal falls from an enchanted rose, lest the Beast remain an animalistic aberration forever. Belle is the non-conforming daughter of an inventor who yearns to abandon her predictable village life in return for adventure. When her father Maurice is imprisoned by the cold-hearted beast, Belle offers him her own freedom in exchange for her father's and eventually learns to love the Beast despite his unsightly outward appearance.

There is a secondary plot that involves Gaston, a loud-mouthed braggart and hunter, who has the hots for Belle and seeks to make a complacent, docile wife out of her. In the end of the tale, Gaston stabs the Beast from behind, loses his footing from the Beast's thrashing and falls to his death. The Beast appears to die from Gaston's stab before the last petal falls. When Belle tearfully professes her love to him, the curse is broken, repairing the castle and restoring the Beast's and servants' human forms. The Prince and Belle host a ball for the kingdom, where they dance happily. In 2017 the film was re-made starring Emma Watson (of Harry Potter fame) to critical success.
